Robert King Awtrey

Captain (retired) Robert King Awtrey (13 March, 1889 – 1952) served in the United States Navy.

Life & Career

Awtrey was born in Texas but was appointed to the Naval Academy from Georgia, graduating with the Class of 1911. He was commissioned Ensign on 7 March, 1912 and was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant (Junior Grade) on 7 March, 1915.[1][2]

In World War I, Awtrey served aboard destroyer Davis. He was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant, temporarily on 1 July, 1917 and permanently on 7 March, 1918. He was further promoted to the temporary rank of Lieutenant Commander on 1 July, 1918.[3][4][5]

In 1921, he was appointed commanding officer of destroyer Crowninshield from 29 October, and was promoted to the permanent rank of Lieutenant Commander on 31 December.[6] From early 1923 to mid 1924, he commanded destroyer Hatfield.[7][8] Following service in the Bureau of Navigation, he was appointed the first commanding officer of river gunboat Guam in 1927.[9][10]

Awtrey was promoted to the rank of Commander on 4 June, 1931.[11] His final active service came as the first commanding officer of gunboat Charleston from 1936 to 1937. After a period of hospitalization, he was placed on the Retired List for incapacity incident to the service on 1 February, 1938.[12][13]

Recalled to active duty in World War II, Awtrey was promoted to the rank of Captain on the Retired List on 25 February, 1942 before returning to inactive status after the war.[14]
